ABOUT US

HY Altitude Training is a fixed high altitude chamber supplying Hastings, East Sussex, and the surrounding areas, to aid and improve performance for a variety of sporting activities. 

HOW IT WORKS

Your bodies ability to transfer oxygen efficiently to your muscles during exercise is essential if you want to be able to sustain longer periods of activity before you fatigue.  

Altitude training (also known as Hypoxic training) creates an environment in which your body has to work harder in order to extract oxygen and transfer it into your bloodstream.  

At sea level, your body uses air pressure to its advantage - atmospheric pressure pushes air into your lungs and therefore into your bloodstream.  When we reduce that barometric pressure (by training at higher altitudes), all of a sudden air is not forced in as easily as it was at sea level, and your body has to work harder.  This is felt by the athlete who now has to breathe harder than normal, and their heart rate increases.  The body reacts to this change by growing more red blood cells to make things easier and get more oxygen pumped to tissues (such as muscles) and pretty quickly becomes more efficient at taking in oxygen and moving it around the body.  This then results in increased fitness and performance, with most people reporting noticeable gains within a month.

IS IT ONLY FOR ELITE ATHLETES / REALLY FIT PEOPLE?

Not at all!  Altitude training is beneficial for anyone, regardless of their fitness level.  Training at altitude has so many benefits - from strengthening the cardiovascular system, recovering from an injury, improving performance and weight loss.  Our clients range from those looking to begin their fitness journey to top level athletes competing at world class level.

HOW LONG WILL EACH SESSION LAST?

The optimum time that we recommend is two hourly sessions per week. 

 If you have more time then great, if you have less time you will still see the benefits.  We offer 30 and 60 minute slots.

I CAN'T AFFORD IT!

We make our prices as competitive as possible and run various seasonal packages and offers.  Many of our clients find this a more cost-effective option for results than a gym membership.  

HOW WILL MY BODY REACT?

Training at altitude will put your body through a more intense workout, however our qualified and experienced team are on hand throughout and will adapt sessions to work within your body's capabilities.  Some people find that once they leave the chamber they feel lightheaded on the initial sessions, but your body will quickly acclimatise.  Everyone is different, which is why you should only choose an altitude training provider with qualified staff.

SUCCESS STORIES

"The benefits of altitude are well documented but for me and my personal experience training in the tent has been massively beneficial over any distance and in a variety of situations when racing on the road. In a 4 week training block (2*1hour turbo sessions every week in the tent) and no other changes in my training I saw a 1 min 20 second improvement in my 10 mile time trial time and almost 6 minutes off my 25 time. This was massive and the single biggest jump I have ever seen in such a short period of time. Although I didn't see a significant improvement in my peek (<10 second) powers I did notice an increase in the ability to repeat sprint efforts, whereas before I could hit powers >1200w five or 6 times in a row after the 4 weeks in the tent this was up to twelve to fifteen times.

I found the staff at Hy Altitude kind, friendly and knowledgeable. I came in as their first cyclist and they were accommodating and well organised. After the first session always had a turbo set up in the tent ready for me to jump onto. To have a resource like this available locally in Hastings is a great asset and something any athlete should be keen to take advantage of. The booking process is easy and efficient but I would however recommend booking at least a week in advance for peek times. I have enjoyed the work I have done with Hy Altitude so far and the benefits have been undeniable, I look forward to the next big race and another PB"
